Cylindrical snake plants (Dracaena Angolensis, synonym Sansevieria Cylindrica) can be propagated from stem cuttings. It can take up to 6 months before cuttings will show any signs of new growth, so be patient.
The steps to propagate a cylindrical snake plant from cuttings are:
- Get your cutting from an existing snake plant.
- Prepare your cuttings for propagation (cut them to be 5 to 7 inches long, and allow the cutting to fry out for 3 to 5 days).
- Pot the cutting into a pot filled with succulent potting mix.
Read on below for a more detailed guide with extra steps and tricks to ensure you have success when propagating cylindrical snake plants from cuttings.
Steps to Propagate Cylindrical Snake Plant From A Cutting
How to propagate cylindrical snake plant from stem cuttings
Approx time to grow new shoots/pups 150 days
Get Your Cutting from An Existing Cylindrical Snake Plant
Using a clean and sharp utility knife or pair of secateurs, cut a stem from an existing cylindrical snake plant.
Make sure what you cut off is at least over 5 inches long which is the minimum ideal size for a cutting you intend to use to propagate.
Prepare Stem Cuttings for Propagation
Cut the stem from the original plant into 5 to 7 inch lengths. This is an ideal length for propagation but if it’s a bit longer or shorter than that, it will probably be fine also.
Let the Cutting Ends Dry Out
Let the cuttings sit for 3-5 days until the end has callused over (to reduce the chance of the cutting rotting).
Sit the cutting on a tray and position it so it won’t catch any direct sunlight but will get indirect sunlight for over 6 hours a day.
Pot the Cylindrical Snake Plant Cuttings
Fill a pot with succulent type potting mix, then insert the cuttings approximately 1 inch deep into the soil. Make sure when the cuttings are inserted that the right end is up.
I haven’t tried using rooting hormone powder when propagating these plants, so I’m not sure if it will help speed up the growth.
Water the cuttings
Give them a really good and deep watering. Water the cuttings at least once a week until you start to see new signs of growth that show the plant has established itself.
Supply:
- Pot
- Potting mix (succulent type)
- Water
Tools:
- Utility knife or secateurs
How Long Do Cylindrical Snake Plant Cuttings Take to Grow
For the cuttings I took shown in the pictures below, it took 6 months for the first sign of a shoot to grow through the soil. For the entire time, I kept the pot outside in a spot that received shade almost the entire day and watered it once a week.
