How to Propagate Alluaudia Procera from a Cutting

Written By George Mylne  |  Uncategorized  |  0 Comments

Alluaudia Procera is a succulent that is native to South-West Madagascar. They are easily propagated from cuttings. To propagate from a cutting the steps are:

  1. Collect your alluaudia procera cutting from an existing tree.
  2. Allow the cutting to dry out for 3-5 days to prevent the chance of rot.
  3. Remove the leaves from the lower two-thirds of the stem cutting.
  4. Prepare a grow pot with cactus style potting mix.
  5. Insert alluaudia procera cutting into the potting mix.
  6. Water the succulent deeply.
  7. Place the cutting out of direct sunlight and somewhere warm until it starts to grow its own roots.

How to propagate Alluaudia Procera from a cutting

  1. Collect your alluaudia procera cutting

To get a cutting from an existing alluaudia procera, be sure to use a sharp and clean pair of secateurs or a utility knife. Ideally, the cutting length will be at least 10 centimetres (4 inches long) to 20 centimetres (8 inches) long.

  2. Prepare your alluaudia procera cutting

After getting your alluaudia procera cutting, allow the cutting to sit out of the direct sunlight for 3 to 5 days.

This will allow the end of the cutting to callus over and reduce the chance of the cutting rotting during the propagation process.

  3. Remove leaves from alluaudia procera cutting

To increase the chance of the cutting successfully propagating, remove the leaves from the lower two-thirds of the cutting.

Removing excessive leaves will help the cutting focus on growing new roots, and not supporting the leaves.

  4. Fill grow pot with cactus potting mix

Fill a grow pot with a cactus/succulent type of potting mix.

  5. Plant alluaudia procera cutting into the potting mix

Create a hole in the middle of the pot and insert the end of the cutting into the potting mix. Firm up the potting mix around the cutting and add more potting mix if required.

  6. Water alluaudia procera cutting

Give the cutting a deep watering.

I like to put the grow pot inside another pot and fill it up to two-thirds with water to let the water thoroughly soak through the potting mix.

Once it has soaked for 5 minutes remove the grow pot and let the water drain out of the grow pot.

  7. Ongoing care

Once your cutting has been planted and watered, then place the planted alluaudia procera cutting somewhere that:
    (1) It won’t receive more than 2 hours of direct sunlight each day,
    (2) It will receive indirect sunlight for most of the day, and
    (3) It won’t be subjected to cold temperatures.

Following the above steps will increase your chances of a successful alluaudia procera cutting propagation.
