The Pandanus Tectorius (Thatch Screw Pine) can be propagated and grown from a stilt root cutting. The steps to do this will be explained below.
Can Pandanus Grow from Stilt Cuttings?
Yes, pandanus can grow from stilt cuttings. It is a popular method for multiplying and propagating these trees.
If you aren’t able to get a cutting you can still grow a pandanus tree if you can find some keys (seeds) from its fruit on the ground around it.
If you can source a stilt cutting from a pandanus tree, you can grow a pandanus palm from seed, which is found in the keys of its fruit. Read my guide on how to germinate pandanus seeds.
Steps to Propagate Pandanus Tectorius (Thatch Screw Pine) From Stilt Root Cutting
You can propagate a thatch screw pine by cutting a stilt root (sometimes referred to as aerial roots) from an existing tree and placing it in some good draining potting mix out of direct sunlight.
Read the below guide on how to do this.
How to Propagate a Pandanus Palm from A Stilt Root Cutting
-
Get a Stilt Root Cutting
When collecting a stilt root cutting from an existing pandanus tectorius (thatch screw pine), I recommend getting one that has already grown long enough to be in the ground.
The reason for this is, that if the stilt root has grown long enough to be in the ground then it would have grown roots, and if it has already grown roots there is a much better chance of success when propagating your pandanus stilt root.
You can use an ordinary pruning saw to cut the pandanus stilt root, and use a shovel to dig the end of it out of the ground, so you don’t damage the roots.
-
Prepare Pot
Position the stilt root in a large grow pot in the centre. Then while holding the stilt root vertical, start filling the pot with a good, well-draining potting mix.
-
Plant Stilt Root Cutting
Once the bottom of the stilt root is buried with the potting mix you can stop balancing the stilt root with one hand and fill up the pot.
Don’t over compact the potting mix and you go.
-
Positioning Pot with Stilt Root Cutting
Pandanus trees do like the sun, but while they are establishing themselves in a new pot and environment it’s best to not position them anywhere they will get direct sunlight but will get at least 5-7 hours of indirect sunlight.
-
Watering
Give the stilt root a deep watering, and then water weekly unless the pot is dry before then. You can test if it’s dry by checking the top 2-3 inches of soil. If it is dry to touch and not moist, then give it another good water.

FAQs
Can Pandanus Stilt Root Grow in A Pot
Yes, a pandanus stilt root cutting can grow in a pot, however, it will eventually outgrow the pot as they are very large trees.
